Least Concern (LC)
Did you know "the Svalbard rock ptarmigan is the only land-inhabiting bird which resides in the archipelago throughout the year" on Svalbard?
And that the mother will fake an injury to attract attention and lead a potential threat away from the baby chick.
The ptarmigan is considered Nearly Threatened (NT) in Norway and Europe. The ptarmigan (lirype and fjellrype) was taken off the red list in 2021 as a population rise over the past years 🙌🏼 This year though, there's been a stop in hunting the ptarmigan in south of Norway, due to a low population count.
THE RED LIST PROJECT
"These beautiful species are at risk to disappear. Thousands are threatened with extinction right now. Many because of human activity. Think about the influence we have, to being able to conserve and protect them. We can stop species from going extinct. We can seek knowledge. We can improve their life conditions. We can co-exist".
