COMMON MURRE / LOMVI / URIA AALGE
This seabird is listed as Least Concerned (LC) internationally by IUCN. In Norway on the other hand the common murre is listed as Critically Endangered (CR) by Artsdatabanken. Scientists assume drowning in fish nets, lack of food and oil industry being the main reasons of its population decline. The bird had a big break down in 1987, but have increased some after, but still critically low. 90 % of these birds in Norway are connected to Bjørnøya, an island between Svalbard and the main land.Did you know that common murre dives for its food? Usually they dive 20-50 meters down for fish, but they can actually dive down to 150 meters if they need to. Being an open water diver, only reaching down to 18 meters as a comparison. They live most of their lives on open water, except from when they breed. Then the whole colony gets syncronized, and gathers on steep cliffs or similar, laying one egg each on bare rock. When the little one is ready for life at sea, all the chicks jump out to the sea at the same time together with their fathers, who follows them until they are 10-12 weeks old.

THE RED LIST PROJECT
"These beautiful species are at risk to disappear. Thousands are threatened with extinction right now. Many because of human activity. Think about the influence we have, to being able to conserve and protect them. We can stop species from going extinct. We can seek knowledge. We can improve their life conditions. We can co-exist".
