BELUGA WHALE / WHITE WHALE / HVITHVAL / DELPHINAPTERUS LEUCAS
The beluga is an arctic whale and has gone from Nearly Threatened (NT) to Endangered (CR) from 2021 to 2023. They are increasingly at risk as Arctic ice cover rapidly declines. They are also being chased away from their habitat from vessel and industrial noise, ship strikes and exposed to toxins. Did you know that belugas are very sociable and vocal mammals? They can produce a series of chirps, clicks, whistles and squeals, which give the beluga its other name, "the canary of the sea."
THE RED LIST PROJECT
"These beautiful species are at risk to disappear. Thousands are threatened with extinction right now. Many because of human activity. Think about the influence we have, to being able to conserve and protect them. We can stop species from going extinct. We can seek knowledge. We can improve their life conditions. We can co-exist".
